Actually, some adult men did use only these devotional names.

One popular example is Nascimento, such as Jose do Nascimento. It usually starts because they were born or baptized on or near Christmas day. And this one quite often becomes a surname in subsequent generations.

Santos can start by birth or baptism near All Saints Day.

Another is one I typed up last night - Manuel da Piedade in Terceira. And in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, there are many examples of men using as their surname "de Jesus" and nothing else.

Another is something like Francisco de Sao Miguel.

But it is certainly the exception for men and one is left with the impression that just women did it.

Why do just women have names with "da Conceição," "de Jesús," "do Coração," etc.?

I noticed that these names were not on their baptismal records.

Were they First Communion or Confirmation names?

Did they or their parents chose the names?

Thanks.
