The 1880 census for San Mateo County, Township 4 (near Half Moon Bay) shows a Manuel Cardoze married to Catherine with a bunch of children (that's a highly technical genealogical term). I was looking at this because I remembered a certain enumerator didn't just write "Azores" or "Western Islands" he wrote the name of the island! In this case it was "Picho". I'm not certain how to present the link--don't you have to be a member to view the census on Ancestry.com? Well, here it is, lower part of the page:
