Very interesting, Eric.

I see he has a Camacho line going back to Bandeiras and likely my relative, since my Camacho is also from Bandeiras.

I also noticed one person in my database named Jose da Rosa Duarte from Feteiras, Faial in the 1700s. Of course, he's too old to be his father, but maybe my hunch was right that his Duarte might come from Faial.

He probably knew his father.

I just looked for the baptism of this Jose Rosa Duarte and either the date is off or he is from another island.
Madalena sure has many using the surname Duarte, though.

I'll see if I can figure it out some day. Maybe when the Horta passports are online I can find his departure. Maybe he was an exposto in Horta Matriz, but was told he was born in Madalena by someone who knew the truth...

Thanks, Eric.

The Joseph Rose Duarte family had the ranch next door to my great grandparents in Atwater. My grandfather sold the family place to them about 1940. Many old studio portraits of their family ended up in our posession.

This photos was in the box with them.  They are still on the property and are partners in the D & S sweet potato packing company. The S half the company, the Souza's make a sweet potato based spirit called Corbin Vodka.
