Hi!

I have the birth record for Maria… not sure why, but I think someone asked me
sometime ago…

Anyway… here you have:

Livro de Batismos de 30.10.1889, Pico da Pedra, Assento nº 51, Flh 22.

- Both parents were born at Pico da Pedra

Maria was granddaughter of:

- maternal side: António Bernardo Aguiar and Jacinta Augusta

- paternal side: Manuel da Câmara de Medeiros and Carolina Cândida

Godfather was José Cabral, unmarried man.

Hope it helps

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Pico da Pedra, Sao Miguel family

I recently learned that one of my cousins on my German/Hungarian/Slovak side
married into a family with Azores ancestry.

Just this morning I discovered that family came from Pico da Pedra in the
concelho de Ribeira Grande which is going to be the very last one put online by
the CCA.

In any case, I thought it would be fun to mention what I know without any
additional research and maybe someone connects to them. These are the ancestors
of someone named John Specht, the son of my first cousin. He just ordered the
Family Finder test yesterday, so we'll eventually find lots of DNA matches, but
this message will serve as an early look as to whom he might link to by the
time his results are back in about May or June.

The family ended up in Bristol, Rhode Island and came from Pico da Pedra, Sao
Miguel.

The mother emigrated with her daughter, Olivia, and her own mother. Apparently
her husband emigrated a year or two earlier, which is common.

Maria Julia de Medeiros, born 1889-1890 in Pico da Pedra, daughter of Luis da
Camara de Medeiros and Isabel de Jesus.

The above Isabel de Jesus, grandmother to Olivia and mother to Maria Julia de
Medeiros, was 53 years old when they were listed in the passports dated 26 Aug
1912 (passport #1735) departing from Ponta Delgada to the USA. She was already
a widow by then. She is the daughter of Antonio Bernardo and Jacinta de Jesus.
By my calculation, she would have been born in Pico da Pedra in 1858-1859.

Other than more descendants which we could share with proven cousins, that's
pretty much all we know.

I'll wait for the Pico da Pedra church records to appear online and trace them
back more. It is my hope at least one remote line came from Pico or Terceira,
but that's probably not likely.

The 1920 or 30 census says they all immigrated in 1910, but I think that year
might have applied to just the husband, Manuel de Almeida Moniz, and in 1912 he
probably earned the money to send for his wife and daughter. And since his
wife's mother was a widow, she came along, too.

In the USA, they were known as Manuel Almeida and Julia. Moniz was not a name
their descendants knew. Family tradition is that the parents of Manuel Almeida
were Jose and Isabel Almeida. We'll see if his father also used Moniz or if
that was picked up from his mother, Isabel. They might also be from Pico da
Pedra, but as yet to be confirmed.
