Hi Liliana,

The last column name is OBS (Observações = Remarks) It says “Afiançado para o
recrutamento”. This means that he has paid the bail for the army, so he could
leave abroad.

Hope it helps.

Thank you, Cheri, that is helpful. It's fortunate that the Ponta Delgada
records are the ones on-line.

I'll wait to see if anyone can translate the notation in that last column for
the boys between 15 and 18.

The 3 ports for the Azores are Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island, Angra on
Terceira island, and Horta on Faial island. I don't know if it was called a
passaporte office, but people did register at the port. Generally, they left
from the port closest to home. NOTE: I said generally. Someone from Corvo
(closest port would be Horta) could go all the way over to Ponta Delgada (the
furthest port) to emigrate out of the Azores. Since you are looking for people
from Santa Maria island, the nearest port would be Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel
island so I'd start there.

You know more about the military conscription than I do.
