As you know only the very rich had any sort of wooden flooring or cement or tile floors. Most homes had hard dirt floors. The women would sprinkle a little bit of water on the ground to keep the dust down and would then sweep the floor. I remember women in Nordeste doing this when I was a young child in the late 50s early 60s. Most women would sing as they did household chores. It was an "Alegria ". People were poor but had genuine joy in their lives. The kind of joy one rarely sees anymore. Our ancestors were truly special people.
