Besides the story of the tea plantation described in my previous post, my husband’s mother told us that her mother’s brother, Padre Manuel Raposo, built a church, but could not remember its name. The source, *History of the Azores in Images*, identified it as Santo Antonio, Nordestinho, Sao Miguel. Using Google with the terms, “Padre Manuel Raposo” and Santo Antonio Nordestinho, the resulting hits verified that information.
A short history of Santo Antonio Nordestinho Portuguese: *http://www.cmnordeste.pt/conteudos.asp?bd=freguesias&id_tema=22*<http://www.cmnordeste.pt/conteudos.asp?bd=freguesias&id_tema=22> This page has its own English translation to click on. It mentioned the “Centro Cultural Padre Manuel Raposo” and using that term in Google, I hit the page describing the events of its dedication in 2008 including a PHOTOGRAPH of the man himself! Inauguração do Centro Cultural Padre Manuel Raposo Portuguese: *http://www.acores.net/agenda/eventos.php?id=4801*<http://www.acores.net/agenda/eventos.php?id=4801> English: *http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.acores.net/agenda/eventos.php%3Fid%3D4801&prev=/*<http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.acores.net/agenda/eventos.php%3Fid%3D4801&prev=/> Another website provided a photograph of a bronze BUST of Padre Manuel Raposo at the Cultural Center. *http://estatuaria-micaelense.blogspot.com/2009/07/manuel-raposo-localizacao-centro.html*<http://estatuaria-micaelense.blogspot.com/2009/07/manuel-raposo-localizacao-centro.html> Zooming in, we could see the date of birth, 17 Sep 1868 (known from the *Livros de Índices* of Ribeira Grande), and the date of death, 23 Jan 1969, which we didn’t know before. He didn’t just live into his 90’s when my inlaws visited him, but he reached his 100th birthday! There were many other hits using various combinations of terms, but by far the most interesting one concerned another story my mother-in-law told. While the church was being built, a great quantity of logs floated by and Father Manuel tied a rope around his waist, plunged into the water and retrieved them to build the church. This very story (with miraculous details) is in the database at CEAO (Centro de Estudos Ataide Oliveira) of the University of the Algarve The founding of Santo Antonio Nordestinho A igreja de Santo António do Nordestinho English: *http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.lendarium.org/narrative/a-igreja-de-santo-antonio-do-nordestinho/*<http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.lendarium.org/narrative/a-igreja-de-santo-antonio-do-nordestinho/> For some reason, trying to click on the Portuguese version, results in a “page not found” message. I was able to find a work-around by clicking on “search form” in the English version and entering: A igreja de Santo António do Nordestinho in the title box. This website has a fascinating collection of fairy tales, legends and folklore from all over Portugal. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
