Vaz Sodre is a combination one finds coming from Graciosa.
I have them from Praia, Graciosa in the late 1500s.
It traces back to the Vaz Sodre family which married into the Correia da Cunha family in the name of Capitao Donatario Pedro Correia da Cunha, in the 1400s.
But just how my own line connects (which is likely but is still just speculation) might never be known and that will be the fate of most other Vaz Sodre lines that weren't the rich ones mentioned in the nobility books.
And DNA testing likely won't help. But if we can identify a direct male descendant of the first Vaz Sodre, then we might happen to find other direct male lines that ended up with other surnames over the generations.
For example, my oldest in this line was listed only as Melchior Vaz, but I would assume could also be found as Melchior Vaz Sodre if I were to scour all the earliest Praia, Graciosa records. But where he got his surname could very well be his mother or paternal grandmother. So even if I could find a direct male line from Melchior Vaz to the present, the DNA test won't necessarily lead me to this original Vaz Sodre family.
What we need is many more people to do the Y-DNA and Family Finder tests. If you have not yet done them and you are a male, please do consider it seriously. If you are a female but have a living male relative, get them tested for Y-DNA and test yourself for Family Finder. Make sure you use www.FamilyTreeDNA.com.
Similarly, if we can identify at least one direct female line all the way to the present, we can learn the mt-DNA of the wife and that will also be interesting.
I am ready and willing to help anyone strategize as to how to find the right people to test, especially if we share common ancestors. I am still working on a project in regards this that will be very exciting once ready.
