Erica, I don't see the word "getz" on the page for the link below, however, at the top of the following page "getz" stands out pretty clearly. My first inclination would be to take it as an abbreviation for the freguesia "Ginetes," but, it is clearly linked to a given name.
My assessment would be that "getz" is a non-Portuguese surname, or alcunha (nickname). The end of the last line on the previous page names the "testemunhas" (witnesses), Manoel d'Almeida Quental, or Quintanilha, and continues onto the next page... "and Francisco getz "Alfaiate," which translates as (tailor), but, which I've also seen as an alcunha (nickname).... Continuing on, there appears to be a "de" and the name Margarida with an abbreviation for Fernanda, or Fernandes, wife of Manoel Rabello, "sacristao (server)" of this church..... Another way that section could be read is "Manoel d'Almeida Quental, or Quintanilha, and Francisco Getz, tailor, or designer, for Margarida Fernanda, or Fernandes, wife of Manoel Rebello, server in this church... As for the abbreviation for Goncalvez, GLZ is the only way that I've seen it abbreviated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Wednesday, May 21, 2014 11:07:22 PM UTC-4, audiosourceinc wrote: > > Is getz another abbreviation for Gonzalves, along with Glz, or is it > shorthand for something else? > > > > Right side bottom entry is the record I am looking at. > > > http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-C-1630-1701/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-C-1630-1701_item1/P96.html > > > > Thank you, > > Erica Botelho > -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
