Hi Mara,

Sorry to correct you, but upto 1976 the island of São Jorge used to belong
to the district of Angra do Heroísmo. For place names in mainland Portugal,
it makes sense to use one of the following:

- parish, municipality, district, Portugal (e.g. Queluz, Sintra, Lisboa,
Portugal); or,
- Portugal, district, municipality, parish (e.g. Portugal, Lisboa, Sintra,
Queluz)

Which one you use depends a lot on your preference. A parish in São Jorge
following the above scheme would indeed include something like São Jorge,
Velas, Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal (for http://tombo.pt/en/f/vls05). When I
created the tombo.pt website, I actually followed this. But as it was
confusing to everyone, I dropped the old districts and in the case of
Azores, I recomend to use the following:

- parish, municipality, island, Açores, Portugal, or
- Portugal, Açores, island, municipality, parish.

I'd recommend to never translate the place names (i.e. use Açores, and
Lisboa instead of Azores and Lisbon). It only confuses when people decide
to translate São Miguel to St. Michael, but they don't translate Flores to
Flowers.

Best regards,

João Ventura
