Thank you Joao, I knew that some where they had to be over 100 years old.

Another question that could be asked is do the churches also keep records? I
know in some countries this is done. It would seem to me that they would as a
matter of church record. Would you know the disposition of those records?

Hi Rick,

It's slightly more complicated than that. March 1911 was the cutoff date for
the law that required all priests to surrender their parish records to the
state. After that, the government-run Civil Registry came into effect, and for
that one there's a separate book each year, and the local government services
are supposed to deliver to the designated archive all the books older than 100
years. But they're only required to do so every 5 years, so the books starting
from 1911 to 1915 will be delivered earliest in 2015.

However, as with any government burocracy there can be delays, there's a lot of
places in Portugal (and I see some in the Azores) that haven't reported getting
any books after 1905.

There is a 100 year rule on releasing records in the Acores. Most likely the
records past March are in the next book which could go to 1915 so it will not
be released until the last record in the book is over 100 years old.

Hello,

Am I seeing this site correctly? I see baptism for 1911 in Arrifes only up to
March?

Is there somewhere else I an go to?
