Good point, Antonio.

Either way, you are related to that person.

Maybe it happens a lot that large chunks of DNA are passed down and we get these false readings for how close they are. I know it's happening for our Azores ancestors where if I am projected as a 4th cousin, it usually means I'm going to be more like a 7th or 8th cousin. We have so many common ancestors giving little segments that they add up to a higher total and then the projection reduces downward the estimated generation.

I am finding the Gedmatch estimates are much more realistic, but still are tricked by all the shared cM.

From what I gather from what Roberta Estes states is that IBS can be just as useful in identifying which populations one descends from as IBD, the main difference being that IBS is picking up a distant common ancestor and IBD is generally considered to be picking up common ancestry in a genealogical time frame. I think that is  very good news for those of us trying to get a better understanding of our Azorean ancestry.
