I am new to this group. I have been looking for ancestors of my paternal great
grandparents, Joe and Mary Perry of Monterey, California, and I have come to a
dead end on info. Without their parents names and the village that they are
from I can't find any info on their origins or ancestors in the Azores.
Hopefully someone in this group is related or knows of someone who is. Here is
the info I have so far from family bibles, photos, death certificates and the
help of Rosemarie with the obits. and death record from the UPEC.

Americanized name: Joe Perry

Portuguese Name: Jose Pereira Escobar from Fayal, Azores

born Jan. 15, 1842 in Fayal?

died Jan 25, 1933 in Monterey, California

He may have had a brother or father or both named Antone Perry (probably
Pereira). One was mentioned in his obit. and the other on his death certificate
with unknown mother.

He lived in the peninsula area in California for 26 years and in the USA for 55
or 65 years (depending on what record you go by), so it is possible that he
first arrived on the East Coast. He sent for his wife after he was established
in California. I suspect it was an arranged marriage and they did not marry
till she arrived in California around 1885, because she was 18 years younger
than him and he arrived in the states when she was only 8 years old. The story
we were told when we were young was that he worked his way over from the Azores
to the States in a cattle boat. (I have no documentation of this.) He owned
their home in Monterey at 198 Park Avenue and had cattle and was well know in
Monterey. When he was young he had red hair and the story in the family goes
that his father beat him because he had red hair instead of black.

Americanized name: Mary Perry

Portuguese Name: Maria Margaret (Bettencourt) Escobar

born Sept. 18, 1860 in Azores or Portugal

died Oct. 22, 1948 in Monterey, California

I have seen her maiden name spelled Bitcart, Bitencurt, Betencourt, or
Bettencourt. Her obituary said that she was a resident of the Peninsula for 50
years and her death certificate said she lived in the country for 50 years. Her
death certificate has her father as Mr. Bitcart and unknown mother. I have
photos of both her and her husband but the only other info I have is from
Ancestry.com that they lived in Monterey.

They had 6 children:

1. Joseph Stanley Perry - b. Sept 8, 1889 in Coyote, California (south of San
Jose and north of Morgan Hill) He died Apr. 6, 1964 in King City, California.
He married Clara Evelyn Machado. He was my grandfather.

2. Anthony Thomas Perry - b. Aug 1, 1991 in Gilroy, California and died Dec 3,
1949 in Monterey, California. He married Catherine Marcella Grimes.

3. Manuel Joseph Perry - b. June 5, 1894 in Los Osos, California and died Dec
22, 1968 in San Luis Obispo, California. He married Mary Olivia Gularte.

4. Florence (Flora) M. Perry - b. Apr 8, 1900 in (probably Monterey),
California and died Sept 17, 1994 in Gustine, California. She was married to
Joe S. Silva.

5. Stella M Perry - b. Sept 5, 1903 in (probably Monterey), California and died
June 14, 1973 in San Francisco, California. She was married to James Augusta
Seyferth.

6. Frances Perry - b. about 1907 in Monterey, California and died sometime
after 1948 probably in San Francisco, California. She was married to Richard
O'Connor.

I hope someone out there is related and can give me some more info to go on.

Thanks everyone!

Barbara Mecklenburg
