Hi Everyone,

Wine production is now on the upswing on Pico island as far as quality goes
after a 100+ year decline in the 1850's after the vines were infected with
a powdery mildew(Odium) and an insect(Phylloxera) destroying the islands
only cash crop.

The Whaling industry filled the void first with Azoreans joining the crews
of American Whaling Ships at an increased rate and then with the industry
being introduced in the Azores directly in the 1880's particularly in Pico
and Faial the industry survived in Lajes do Pico until the 1980's when
Portugal joined the European Community.

Here is a link with some really beautiful pictures discussing wine from
Pico island.
