Cheri! When someone dies at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia it means that person was ill. Santa Casa da Misericórdia was where the “hospital” was. Part of the money people had to pay in fees and fines to the church was to maintain those hospitals (:)). That person was buried without paying nothing to the hospital. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia had some graves reserved in the church to bury their dead.
