This study doesn't list which branches of H, U, or X . However U5 is believed to represent the original population of Europe(Hunter/Gatherers) before the spread of agriculture in the Neolithic period from the
Middle East and Anatolia(modern day Turkey) , it is also believed to be the oldest branch of U. Haplogroup X especially X2 is now found throughout Europe it's spread is believed to have occurred more than 20,000 at the time of the Last Glacial Maximum(the ice age) but it is now found more commonly in the Middle East especially among the Israeli Druze community. X1 is rare in Europe. Haplogroup H is the most commonly found mtDNA in Western Europe and along with Y-DNA R1b could this sample possible be H1? This link discusses Portuguese samples from the Mesolithic Period 10,000-5,000BC an H1 is possibly represented but some question whether the samples were contaminated. http://www.ancestraljourneys.org/mesolithicdna.shtml A.Faria -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
