Most of the Azores Emigrants in the 1800s came to Australia looking for
gold and went to the goldfield in Victoria or Kalgoolie in Western Australia.
There are lists of the people who came to the goldfields and I can find
them but it will take a while I.m leaving in a 1 hour to go for a week’s
break. When I get back I can find if the local family history Centre on the
Gold Coast has copies of the lists, they have an extensive micro fiche
library. My great grandfather Jose de Andrade de Macedo came to Australia
about
1860 and might have come on the Waterlily . I will have to look up my
Argentinian Aunts letters when I get back. The gold rushes were almost
finishing
by the time my g grandfather got here and then he went on to New Zealand.
He married in N.Z then went to Argentina leaving his son in N.Z. hence I
was born in N.Z. but now live in Aus. I know from my aunt that we have
relatives in Sao Miguel but haven’t had time to research it. There are
certainly
a number of Sousas in the family. I’ll be in touch when I get back and if
someone else hasn’t helped you I’ll see what i can find out for you.

Christine Macedo
