If the record is less than a century old, research will be difficult. Also, if
less than 100 years old, and the child is labeled as illegitimate, some
restrictions apply as to whom the record can be released, just like in most of
our states. The word illegitimate can be reacted from a typed transcription,
though. The church has no such restrictions. I would suggest that if you have a
parish, a month, a year, and your father knows the name of the mother, you
could write to the parish priest. I doubt that a priest would be willing to
provide you with a number of possible candidates. Also, keep in mind that for
at least the last 30-40 years, women have been having their children in the
hospital. That means if the mother, for example, was living in Mosteiros, she
likely gave birth in Ponta Delgada, which makes matters more complicated.
However, the child would have been baptized in the mother's parish. In
contacting the priest, you are essentially looking for a baptismal, not a birth
record, but the baptismal record would contain most of the information you
need. I hope this helps. Good luck!

My father just informed me that he fathered a child in the Azores. He knows
the year, month, and parish the child would have been born, but knows little
more. Does anyone have suggestions on where to begin looking for birth records
of children to single mothers within a certain location and time frame?
I know it's not much but at least it's a start.
Thank you.
