Dolores,

Most likely someone from Luz, Graciosa is going to depart from Angra and so you need to wait for the Angra passaportes to come online. It took two years after the Horta Archive said they already scanned all the records and sent them to the CCA for posting before the CCA finally got around to posting them. But that would seem to be the very next thing that could appear now that all church records are online for every island. No way to guess.

My Grandfather Jose Teixeira Bettencourt sailed (on a sailing ship) so the story was, about 1883. He was from Luz. He was about 11 yrs old. Where would I look for his passport?
Thank you, Dolores Vener

Could someone help me read the top record on this Passport page:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1908-1920/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1908-1920_item1/P60.html

I can read most of it except who Francisco was traveling with. I think it’s his wife Anna Pereira Faria and maybe brother Jose ..but not sure what it says after that. I think this is my grandfather’s brother .

Thank you,

I'm not sure what planet the I.T. department is from or how they ever make
it out of that office alive, but here's the latest from them:

<<Updated the GEDCOM upload on myFamilyTree to handle foreign characters
properly.>>

I can log into some kits and still see the diacritics not displayed
properly. However, I don't have time to got through 800+ pages to see who
used diacritics and which trees display properly and which don't.

So if you have your tree up, please let me know if you are getting boxes or
other strange things where the diacritic should be. Send me your kit
number, and how you saved the Gedcom (ANSEL or ANSI format - if you
remember). I'll compile a list and let IT know they still don't quite have
it right yet. <sigh>

Thanks!
Cheri

I would like to make a friendly suggestion and I have mentioned it before
but I really do think it is that important. I have noticed that many people
in the Azores Project do not list the Island or the Village of their
maternal or paternal ancestor even when that information is available this
is too bad I will explain why. These islands were settled by a small number
of people we are all related, James H. Guill wrote in his book A History of
the Azores Islands that he believed that the islands were settled by about
2,000 families, I don't know if that can be verified but it is an
indication that we are all descended from a relatively small source
population. Currently there are about 250,000 people living in the Azores
descendants of those original settlers with over 1,000,000 in North
American and I suspect at least 10 times that amount in Brazil. In my own
humble opinion in order to put the puzzle together it is also important to
record the Village(freguesia) and island of our ancestors next to their
names particularly because of the inconsistent way surnames were often
handed down.

The DNA results are showing some patterns I have been doing some research
on specific Y dna and Mtdna haplogroups and it is apparent the there are
some interesting patterns showing up but unfortunately many people don't
list their ancestral village or island not because of not having the
information but because of not understanding the benefit of doing so. I
believe I counted about 150 Y-DNA results in the Project that don't list
even an island much less their ancestral Village.

I do however want to say thank you to the person who is currently
organizing the results it is really looking nice.

NOTE: Although this is titled "Azores Genealogy Conference" it is open to
anyone with Portuguese ancestry. The only thing we don't cover is the
Madeiran ARM, but there are people in our group who can assist with that
database. Madeirans and Cape Verdeans are welcome to attend.

Once again, we are hosting the Azores Genealogical Conference and Research
Trip in Salt Lake City, at the Plaza Hotel, next door to the Family History
Library! Joao Ventura, from Terceira, will be attending and speaking along
with me and Rosemarie Capodicci. It will be held Tuesday, April 7th
through Friday, April 10th (this is right after Easter). The meet and
greet will be held Monday night between the hours of 7:30 - 9:30 pm for
those arriving the day before.

We designed the conference to give you enough information in the beginning
so we can help you after dinner and a good part of the day on Friday. A
lot of the magic happens after the classes. We will have a sign up sheet
this year for 30 minute slots with Joao, Cheri, or Rosemarie. We will sit
with you and go though document by document. We want you to be successful!

The conference fees will remain at $80 this year for 4 days of classes and
research assistance. Money must be mailed by Friday, March 20th. After
that, the fee will be $100 at the door. International people email me,
Cheri, off list, as converting funds at your bank may be a headache for you.

We were able to secure the genealogy special again at the Plaza Hotel. The
special is the "Stay 3 nights and get the 4th free" at the rate of $85 a
night (plus all the taxes and stuff). The regular room rate is $129 a
night. Your room must be booked by Friday, March 6th.

NOTE: There will NOT be another genealogy conference for at least 18-24
months after this one. So NO genealogy conference in April 2016.

If you want the registration, I can attach it in an email to you (between
the group filter and various ISPs, I know it will get to you). Kathy
Cardoza will post it on the Azores GenWeb. I just sent it to her and I
don't know her plans this weekend, so it may be a few days before she gets
it upload. I'll post that link when it is available.

Hope to see many of you there!

Just for everyone's FYI, the airfares are way down from last year. Last
year I paid $280 round-trip from San Jose CA, this year I can get a
round-trip, non-stop for $151 and change! That's a big drop in airfare. I
didn't check other except Oakland CA and it was about the same, just a few
$$ cheaper than San Jose.

Maria Elena, the child's given name is Prajano, The father's name is
Mathias Jose da Silveira from the parish of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, ilha
do Pico); the mother's name is Maria Adelaide da Silva Lima of the parish
of Apostolo Sao Pedro, Ponta Delgada, resident on Rua da Calheta. I
wouldn't lend weight to the names on the other documents unless there is
evidence that your ancestor actually used the names mentioned therein.

Prajano? I googled it. I got a place in Italy. Is there a Saint
Prajano? Is there a meaning to this name, or is it just a name.

Maria Elena, I guess I'd be thrilled too! Not your usual group of expected
names!

Maria,

It's Trajano. See the difference between the T from Trajano and the P from
Piedade on the record.

Trajano is a given name in portuguese, I never saw Prajano.

Oh- Manuel- thank you- that makes sense. In the 1900 US Census the transcriber wrote "Terajean" now I can see how Trajano could look like Terajean- if I stretch it. Also- I can see how he would go by John as he grew up in boston.

I LOVE the wonderful people on this list- you are so helpful.

Manoel,

So is the Portuguese name Trajano from what we would say as Trajan in
English? The Roman emperor? Because Roman & Latin makes much better sense
to me than a place in Italy!
