There is no stock answer to your question. It could be that your aunt was referring to the family name of her father or mother. Naming traditions seem to change at different times and some woman started using a family name later in life. In some of the last records which I found my 2nd great grandmother she was named as Rita de Pimentel. In earlier she was named as Rita de Jesus or Rita dos Santos.
As you go further back in your search you could very well find the da Rocha in your tree. On the record of birth is written the parents names: José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria Magdalena do Rosário; On the record of marriage is written: José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria Magdalena do Rosário. One my mother's cousin asked my mother's aunt the parents names of their grandparents and she said for him that the names are José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria DA ROCHA. The question is: Was it usual change the name of bride when she married? I hope a answer from some expert. Thanks in advance!
