Someone earlier asked what a passport looked like, so I'm attaching a picture
of my grandmother's Horta Passport. The original is brittle and in pieces, so
the scan isn't perfect, but I'm still thrilled to have it. Frances emigrated to
the US years earlier, but returned to Faial for a visit in 1909. She and my
grandfather were married later that year, so I've always wondered if she had
her wedding dress made during the visit. The information on the left side
matches the last entry on Passaportes, Faial 1908 - 1920 > 0008. The larger
section on the right translates something like: Passport granted to Francisca
Garcia, single, native of the village of Cedros, daughter of Antonio Garcia
Moitoso and Maria Clara in order to leave the realm with the destination of the
United States of America.
