Just a finer point on who to test. Cheri is 100% correct when ordering a Family Finder to test the oldest living relative. But say you really want to test your Y-DNA if your father or even better your grandfather is still living have them take the test so that down the road you decide to test the family finder your father’s or grandfather’s DNA is already on file (Family Tree DNA stores the unused vile of your DNA for 25 years) if by that time your father or grandfather is deceased you already have the DNA on file to use for the test. After my father died two years ago I saw a need to test his Full Sequence MtDNA we were able to do that because his DNA was on file from a previous test.

For the bottom of the pedigree chart (the mother's mother's mother's line), one could order the mtDNA test. Either a man or woman can take this one. The results are generally anthropological in nature. However if more people order the Full Mitochondrial Sequence Test, and as the database reaches critical mass, more genealogical matches will be made.
