Sean, That's the way it works.....a baby is baptized by first name ONLY. I think in my 23 years so of research, I've seen only 1 baby with two given names. It was someone who posted it recently on this list.
Start with what you know and work back. That way you will always have the parents' names. My ancestor was Manuel de Mello. Pretty common. Once I had his parents' names, I went to his freguesia and started searching in 1889 working my way back, stopping at every Manuel until I found mine in 1887 (he had multiple birth dates). Then I collected ALL his siblings. I wanted to learn how to "read" the writing AND to get used to the format of that time period. Also, I pick up additional names or alcunhas of the parents (not this line, but another line they went from Mello to Mello Barboza).
