Manita asked:
<<What determined what went into this book? THE book?

Is it the original settlers?>>

Easy part first: No, there is no list of "original settlers" running around
for the Azores.

As for the indices that some are posting about (a previous thread is
mentioning Canto's Achada marriage index)......

Ernesto do Canto made an index for some events from some freguesias for
some families from Sao Miguel. The ones he considered important or what was
important or related to him. He did this in the latter half of the 1800s.
His indices were not filmed or digitized (to my knowledge) and can be
accessed by going to the archives in Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel. Rodrigo
Rodrigues knew Canto. He lived until the 1950s, I believe. He did go
through some of these indices and added more people or made corrections.

Gaspar Frutoso (I may be spelling his last name wrong) was a priest and
historian and lived in the 1500s, I believe. He wrote the Saudades da Terra
series and documented many families on many islands. The documentation is
poor and many are listed without any dates.

I am going to attach an image that Paul Gomes asked for from the Achada
index.
