Some of those mainland connections are documented in Frutuoso (like the Velho
Cabrals). In Rodrigo Rodrigues and in Forjaz (Genealogias da Ilha Terceira)
whenever the lineage of an early settler can be traced back to the mainland,
Rodrigues and Forjaz have not only outlined these connections but also list
sources, e.g. Nobiliario de Familias de Portugal (Gaio), etc. If Rodrigues and
Forjaz do not have those connections, then it probably means that they have
never been discovered (and probably never will be). Keep in mind that Gaio and
Frutuoso are not infallible; they have made some mistakes with these older
lineages.

about finding the records prior to arriving in Sao Miguel?
