A ferreiro is actually a blacksmith, and yes, this was a key position in a village.

However, their wives had different first names but both were De Andrade. At first I thought they could be the same person except the two men were from different parishes. One from Santa Barbara and the other fromNS de Assuncao on island of Santa Maria. Both wives were from the same parish. Does anyone know what that occupation was way back in 1727? Fereira relates to ferro or iron(?). I don't think they had railroads there (?). It seems unusual to record the occupation back in those days. Maybe copper? This is on Santa Maria island. Here's the link to my ancestor, in case I didn't read it correctly- official de ferreiros (!) It's cool to have an occupation for an ancestor who lived in 1727! Now if I only knew what it was!!
