HI Cindy, The Cape Verde islands are NOT part of the Azores islands or the Madeira islands. They used to be owned by Portugal, but today, Cape Verde is its own African nation.
Sao Vicente is one of the Cape Verde islands. But that doesn't mean he was born there. That may be the port that the ship left from. You'll need your Jose's village from Cape Verde. The Portuguese Hawaiian Society has a lot of resources. Email dgnils at hotmail dot com. His name is Dan Nelson and he is a volunteer at the society. Maybe they have some other resources besides your guy's port. Also check out Melody Lassalle's Portuguese Hawaiian Resources page at www.yourislandroutes.com She has a lot of resources for the Hawaiian researcher. Good luck, Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
