mtDNA matches are different than Y or autosomal (Family Finder) matches. With mtDNA, people need to test the Full Mitochondrial Sequence test (HVR1, HVR2, and the Coding Region (CR)).
After testing, about 50% of your matches with be within 1000 years with mtDNA testing. With a genetic distance of 0 (ZERO). So if you are looking at a genetic distance of 1, you could be taking a couple of thousand years ago, which explains you matching half of Europe.
