This is an update on the Mello Castanho/Monte Bastos post I made earlier
today. Since then, I have figured out the connection to the Mello Castanho
tree for the man in the passport record.

Manuel Melo Castanho was the son of Francisco Mello Castanho and Rosa Monte
Bastos. I found Francisco & Rosa's marriage record today. Francisco and
Rosa were married 7 Feb 1903 in Maia.

Francisco was the son of Joao de Mello Castanho and Francisca Julia da
Conceicao aka Francisca Claudina in some records.
Rosa was the daughter of of Joao Moniz Miranda and Maria Monte Bastos

I have not tracked the Monte Bastos line, though I know the surname is
quite common in Maia. I have the Mello Castanho line worked back several
generations. If anyone is researching this line, I can provide Francisco's
ancestry. He is related to me via Mello Castanho and also de Braga.

This is, in fact, my cousin's line. Francisco is the brother to her
grandmother, Engracia (Mello Castanho) Moniz Thomas (aka Moniz Tracado).
Their siblings Jose, Joao, Manoel, and Ermelinda all migrated to
America--as well as Engracia (though she moved back and forth between Fall
River, MA and Maia)

If anyone is researching these lines and would like more information, let
me know. I've done quite a bit of work on the Mello Castanho family in the
USA and Maia...and starting to fill in the blanks in Canada.
