Cheri & Rosemarie— thanks for the definition of “Calvo” although it would
seem that the Medeiros Grota men in later centuries seemed to retain a full
head of hair far into retirement. :) I will say that I have a LOT of
Antonio de Medeiros men on my tree and keeping them straight does drive me
a bit mad.

Margaret — It didn’t dawn on me that the “Dom” was also a clergy
designation. I work of the church and am very familiar with the various
ranks and titles. D’oh!

As I continue backwards in time I guess I’ll be looking for both the de
Medeiros and Calvo names. I just wish the handwriting was better on the
eyes…

Thanks!
Joanne Grota Mercier

Joanne, in this case the "Dom" you are reading is a honorary title for the
Bishop, who exempted the couple for the 6th degree of consanguinity,
allowing them to marry.

Antonio Calvo could be picking it up from one of the grandparents, you may
find continuity as you go back further on this line.

Early settlers, among others, named by G. Frutuoso and RR are Bernardim
Calvo e Joao Calvo sons of Afonso Anes, da Maia. Rodrigo Rodrigues Cap. 50
section 1.
