I'm still hunting down Joaquim Benedicto. Hopefully I've found, and
translated, his marriage record and birth records of both himself and his
wife. So far I have lots of great new information and two more generations
on both sides.

However, that's if this Joaquim is my Joaquim. I "know" (that's a loaded
word huh) from the US 1910 census that he migrated to the US in about 1885,
when he was about 10 years old.The very first record of him I can find in
the US is his 1906 arrival on the SS Brooklyn with his new wife. The ship
manifest does say that he's a US citizen. He does not seem to appear in the
1990 or 1890 (fragment) census records. I can find no record of his parents
in the US either.

So my next search is for his passport in about 1885. I'm starting with
the Angra do HeroĆsmo passports as he's from Terceirca. If I have no luck
there I'll move on to the other ports. My questions are

1) A bit of a subjective one I suppose ... Did children ever travel to the
US at that time without their parents? I would think it was uncommon.

2) re Reading the records. I see the printed headings at the top of each
page and understand them mostly. I don't know what the last column on each
page says. It's something like "no do masso em que esta archivado o
processo" Here's an
example.

I don't know if this is going to be meaningful for me.

3) re Reading the records. As a child will he most likely have his own
listing or should I be looking for his name in the listing of an adult?

Many thanks for all your help.
Samantha
