I just watched the announcement and here are a few things about it.
The New England Historical and Genealogical Society has partnered with the Arch Diocese of Boston to scan and index all sacramental records from 1789 through 1900. There are over 900 volumes which cover 84 towns and 154 parishes. The records will be put up on the website CatholicRecords.Americanancestors.org first in a browsable format and later an index will be added. You will be able to view the records an download them at no cost (Just register on the site as a guest user). The early records include some outlying parishes from Providence to Newburyport. The later records cover a lesser area but go west to Marlboro and south to Middleboro. Sacramental records cover Baptisms (which usually include birth date), First Communion, Confirmations, Marriages, and Funeral. While this may not help for many of us doing Portuguese research it may help some. It will definitely help those doing Italian, Irish, and French Canadian Research. Now if Fall River will follow. They make agreement with government entities. In this case, it sounds as if FamilySearch made an agreement with the Diocese of Boston, with that being the governing entity. As for individual LDS members doing the LDS baptism thing on non-family members, it is my understanding that LDS church somehow were able to stop individuals from doing that. Apparently, a group of individuals exist that went around doing the LDS thing on every person they could find, even though they weren't related. The LDS Church only keeps records for genealogy purposes and preservation so that they are nor lost or ruined. They honor each and every commitment that they make with the donor and that is why some of the records available on microfilm are not available online because the licensing agreement did not specifically allow for that. There are a lot of records that we would not have available to us if it were not for the LDS folks. My sense from speaking personally with some of the priests is that they want to be sure their records are being used by the families involved for genealogy purposes only. They take very seriously their canonical duties to protect the people’s information they are given. Unfortunately some LDS folks might have spooked the parishes into locking down their information. With Boston going forward with this Fall River will be watching and waiting to see what happens. Providence, however, will be another story altogether… Just my two cents.
