Kim, because of WWI the Census takers were instructed to state the exact country where people were born. The USA wanted to know who was from the "enemy" countries; Germany, Italy etc. You will see on many Azoreans that the Island is crossed out and 'OC' which I believe would be 'other' country as opposed to Germany and the other countries that were split up after the war. The same for 'OL' for other language.
