I'm so excited! He and his family were from Capelo, Faial. His father was Antonio Pereira GOULART; mother was Maria Angelica do Coracao de Jesus. I am now trying to connect him from his birthplace in Capelo to where he lived for a little over 40 years in California, and then back to Capelo where he died. I'm having no luck finding passports, naturalization papers, etc. on him so the search continues. I have someone looking up his death record for me so hope to find more there! On to the ENOS/ENES VARGAS possibly DIAS side next! Thanks to everyone who responded. If anyone has Manuel and/or any of his family members in your family and have pictures, PLEASE contact me! My great-grandmother's family as well was from the Azores. I have been trying to find out specifically which Azores island they are from. I am hoping someone may recognize a name or two from the information I have gathered these past few years. Here's what I have... My maternal grandfather: Lawrence Daniel FARIA, born 5 June 1907 in Martinez/Richmond, Contra Costa Co. CA; died 18 Nov 1961 in San Pablo. I have his WWII draft card and headstone application. My great grandfather: Manuel P. (Pereira?) FARIA born in the Azores 1877. His WWI draft card says January. A census says Feb. His year of immigration is either 1894 or 1895. The earliest census I have from 1900 has him newly married and living in Port Costa. From 1910 until 1930, they lived in Richmond, Contra Costa Co. CA. In the 1930 census, he isn't listed, but someone named "John S." is, and is the same age Manuel would be. His occupation was as a laborer in an oil refinery (Standard Oil?) I can find no record of him immigrating, and no death record. It's like he just disappeared. My great grandmother: Emma ENOS born in California 12 July 1880; died 30 Sep 1957 in Santa Clara, but was brought back to be buried at St. Joseph's in San Pablo, Contra Costa. I believe her parents were John ENOS (VARGAS) born abt.1841; immigrated either in 1860 or 1868, lived in Concord, Contra Costa County and is a farmer; and a woman named Emma VARGAS. They were married about 1870. >From my great grandmother Emma's obit, I was able to get the names of her >siblings, and they are present with this couple in several census reports. >Emma's siblings include: Joseph b. abt. 1873 Mary L. (DUTRA) b. abt. 1874 d. 1957? of Concord Annie b. abt. 1882 Theresa (NUNES) b. abt. 1884 of Concord Manuel b. abt. 1885 Frank b. abt. 1887 of Concord Angie (MESQUITA) b. abt. 1889 d. 1972 Aggie; nickname for Agnes (BENZ) b. abt. 1892 Evelyn (MCDERMOTT) b. abt. 1897 d.1966 In a census report, John and Emma state they had 14 children, 13 who were living- so I don't know where the others are listed. These are all I could find. My great-grandparents Emma and Manuel had the following children (besides my grandfather Lawrence): Manuel G. (wife TAMBLYN) b. 1902 d. 1976 in San Pablo Evelyn Mary (KELLY/BLODGETT) b. 1909 d.1989 in Washington John H. b. abt. 1914 Anthony P. b. abt. 1914 d. 2004 Philomena (DAVIS) b.1915 d. 1936 in El Cerrito Margaret M. (BETTENCOURT) b. abt. 1917 Frances Patricia (ELLWANGER) b. abt.1919 d. 1987 in Santa Clara Rose Ann (ATKINSON) b. abt.1921 d. 2000 in San Pablo If anyone knows any of these people or someone who does; knows of any living descendants who keep good records; or anything about any of them- PLEASE contact me!
