In many of the documents of burials for my ancestors I see the
following: “she was buried in the church of Lajes and it will be paid 8 VINTENS
for the grave”. Likewise. “He didn’t make a will and there will be 200 reis
paid for the grave.” Also, In her will she determined she wanted 30 masses for
her soul, 10 masses for her intention and half a ceremony. She was buried at
the church and lit will be paid 8 ViNTENS ‘for the grave”. What is meant by
“half-a ceremony? and what is meant by 10 masses for her INTENTION? Finally, “
He didn’t make a will and was buried in the church of Ladies. It will be paid 2
TOSTOES FOR HIS SOUL. Does anyone know the current values of a reis, vintner or
tostoes?

Was it fact or fiction that anyone baptized as Maria (or a variation of Mary)
or Joseph the baptism was free?
