Antonio Marthias de Varga and Emmanuel de Silva who were cousins arrived in Auckland from the Farilhoes in Portugal on the whaling ship the “Noble” in 1840. Antonio changed his name to Martin and married Agnes Fleming from Scotland in 1849. They had 14 children, the third child being Antonio born 1854. Emmanuel became Christian and married Agnes sister Christina in 1856. They had 4 children, the youngest being Josephine Louisa born 1860. Antonio married Josephine in 1885 and they had 4 children, the eldest being Isabel Josephine born 1886.
