Sean, Seems like you'll have to go through the CCA site in Candelaria for 1797 give or take a year to find Manuel's baptism. Unfortunately, the CITCEM site (for both Sao Mateus and Concelho da Magadela) doesn't provide his parents, which leads me to believe he was abandoned. Having said that, it could just as easily be that the record in Candelaria was unreadable. Unlike Sao Mateus, the Candelaria records are often in terrible condition-ink blots, severe fading, torn pages, etc.
