Thanks for posting a link to my article, Cheri!

I have been fortunate that a good portion of this line stayed in Maia for
many generations. So, you can imagine that the further you go back the
more you marry into families and the more people you collect.

It really wasn't until a cousin in Fall River, MA found me that I started
to collect most of the village. We had to do quite a bit of research to
figure out how her line that left in the 1890s and my line that left in
1882 were related. By the time we got done untangling it, we had
researched half the darn village. Now we know that we are 4th cousins,
once removed through 3 lines, and 6 cousins twice removed (once).

It's because of delving into the families that I've been able to find my
connections to Craig Mello (Nobel Prize winner), David Leite (chef and
cookbook writer/columnist), and Remigio Pereira (Canadian singer and
musician)--all with roots in Maia.

Finding the famous people is fun, but I feel because I've done so much
research in this one village, I have a little more sense of who they are,
their ancestry, and how my family fits in. Learning that I have cousins in
California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Canada, and
most likely Brasil (haven't explored that one yet) is pretty neat.
