Hi Suzanne, I'm 99.5% sure that a "z" with a comma under it never existed in the Portuguese language. But I'll let a native speaker address that.
His "c" is inconsistent, but the closest "c" is in the word "nasceu" (end of line 3). I think he wrote Mendoça. He's mispelled it. I'd record it as Mendonça (or Mendonca if you don't use diacritics) in your genealogy program and make a note that it was spelled as "Mendoça" on Luzia's baptism. I think the priest left out the 2nd "n" or didn't know how to spell it in the first place. Or you can always blame the vinho!
