Hello Mary Bordi,

Thanks for your post which I find interesting. I have an Esperanca Rosa da
SILVEIRA in my family tree however she was married to José Silveira de
MATTOS on 14 April 1828, Manadas, São Jorge, Azores. http://culturacores.
azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-MANADAS-C-1776-
1831/SJR-VL-MANADAS-C-1776-1831_item1/P149.html

As best I can see from the marriage record her parents are given as unknown
(my translations skills are poor) so its a bit of a stab in the dark.

I've had a look at the obito entry and with my poor skills and a poor
quality image I can barely make out her name let alone anything else.
Assuming however she was 80 at the time of her death her year of birth
would be circa 1798. If the death and marriage records are the same
Esperanca then she would have been 30 (or there abouts) at the time of the
marriage. Interesting that age would be a close match as too the
connection to Manadas.

I know that my Esperanca and her husband José had a son João Silveira de
MATTOS. He migrated to Australia (Sydney) at some stage changing his name
to John Matts and marrying a Jane STEVENS 2 October 1868 in Sydney, New
South Wales, Australia. They had nine children. He died in Australia and
to my knowledge never returned to the Azores.

Getting back to the two Esperancas, if they are the same, could that her
husband died before her possibly in Manadas, she moves to Rosais possibly
to live with relatives if she has no further children (living). This
additional detailed information may not have been known at the time of her
death by those providing the information so hence why she may have been
listed as single. Speculation i know.

Your thoughts?

Regards Tony
