Kathlene,
Põe, põe, galinha põe, põe (the põe word, souds like “bom” if you pronounce it with S. Miguel accent) Ovinhos para o bébé (or “para o menino”, or” menina” as if it was a boy or a girl…) (I still remember the music :) ). Meaning: “chiken, give an egg do the baby”. It comes from old times when eggs where like money… you could trade a dozen of eggs for sugar, as an example. Eggs where kept as money… the day of your birthday you could eat a fried egg with all the family kids staring at you! eliseu De: azores@googlegroups.com [mailto:azores@googlegroups.com] Em nome de Kathlene Lima Enviada: segunda-feira, 14 de agosto de 2017 13:36 Para: Azores Genealogy <azores@googlegroups.com> Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandmother's Nursery Rhyme Hi all, I hope this is not the wrong place to ask about this subject but I am doing a project for my nieces. I would like to give them a booklet for Christmas, listing all the Portuguese phrases I learned over the years from my father and aunts. I am the last person exposed to this history and do not want it to get lost. There was a nursery rhyme my family sang to babies. It started with "Bom Bom,Gahlina, Bom bom. Sounded like Boom. I know that means "Good Chicken". As the rhyme is sung, the baby's palm is tapped. No one outside of my family has ever heard of this but my family has always played this with baby's. My Grandfather was from Sao Miguel and my Grandmother Faial. Thanks so much and let me know if this is not an appropriate forum to ask this question.
