Suzanne,

The Confession Rolls were sort of a Church Census that the Priest took each
year to see who had made their confessions and communion. The usefulness is
that it places your family in a specific place and tells you who is living
together in that house. Often times the mother or mother-in-law is living
with a daughter's family. In later years (late 1900's at least) the
relationship to the head of house is given.
