Sure, here's a brief run down. Y-DNA: This type of DNA traces a man's father's father's father's line or the top of his pedigree chart. If you are a guy and you want that one line and that one line only, you are the perfect candidate. I wanted to know about my mom's brickwall Pinkleys. I'm not a man and neither is she. I had to hunt down a male 3rd cousin with the surname of Pinkley to take the test. So if you are using this to figure out a brick wall, you'll have to do some sleuthing to figure out the right candidate. If you need help figuring it out, just email.
mtDNA: This type of DNA traces anyone's mother's mother's mother's line or the bottom of the pedigree chart. It's best used in conjunction with another researcher or with Family Finder due to its slow mutation rate. Once the mtDNA database reaches critical mass, about half the matches will be within a genealogy time frame (for those who take the Full Mitochondrial Sequence (FMS) test). Family Finder (autosomal DNA): This type of DNA traces anyone's lines back about 200 years from the birth of the test taker. ALL the lines. So if you are half Portuguese and half British Isles stuff, you're going to get matches with both. This one also gives you those ethnicity ESTIMATES that you see advertised on TV. If you have a living parent (or the lucky few with a grandparent), test them first. Or the sibling of your deceased parent works too. If you have never DNA tested and are thinking about it, this year end Holiday Sale is a great time. If you have no specific DNA goal in mind and just want to get into it, then do Family Finder for $59 USD (+$9.95 reduced shipping through Friday. I think it's $9.95). I also have $10 off Family Finder coupons too that are coming in.
