For those who wish to send Christmas greetings, please hit reply to this email and type away. A couple of rules: 1) Do NOT start your own new email. Use this one. A very, very small percent (2-3%) of this list participates in the Christmas greeting. We do NOT want to annoy the other 97-98%. Just hit REPLY and type away :) 2) You many send your Christmas greetings through December 25th, your time. That means if you log into your computer at 12:01 a.m. on December 26th, you are too late. 3) Please send the e-cards, blinking gifs, memes, to your PERSONAL friends, NOT the list. Many times the filter will call them spam. I won't have the time to unblock them for you. So if they don't go through, you will know why and there will be no need to write me asking why your e-card didn't go through. The spam filter ate it. I have a question about the stamps that often are at the end of the marriage records. My great-grandfather & great-grandmother (Francisco Frederico da Silveira & Anna Corvello da Silveira) have quite a few stamps (stamps on left side of page): http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-C-1900-1910/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-C-1900-1910_item1/P17.html I assume they had to pay more because they were leaving the Azores and immigrating to the US? However, the marriage record directly following (on the same page) (No. 4 José Jacintho Teixeira & Maria Corvello Teixeira) is of my great-grandmother's sister, who emigrated with her, and her stamp is only for 100 reis. Why didn't she have to pay as much? Would appreciate any insight! Thanks! Anna Researching Corvello / Silveira / Fajãzinha, Flores Cheri Mello <[email protected]>: Dec 24 10:11AM -0800 Hi Anna, The stamps have nothing to do with leaving the Azores. My ancestors were 13 and 16 when they left. They have no stamps on their baptisms. If I remember correctly, a fee needed to be paid when a couple married. If the family had some money, the fee was paid. If not, it was recorded that the family was too poor. Those with a better understanding of the history and laws of the time period can explain more. Right now, I'd say your ancestors were better off than most in their freguesia/village. For those interested, the book is called *Victorian Fshions for ...* by Linda Setnik. Some really nice pictures used for the examples. Rosemarie [email protected] Researching Sao Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa, Faial and Pico, Azores, Isola delle Femmine, Sant' Elia, Sicily On Sat, Dec 23, 2017 at 12:01 PM, Azores Genealogy group < Azores Genealogy group <[email protected]>: Dec 24 02:48AM -0800 G'day all, I'm still awaiting further information from the owner of the picture and hopeful of being able to sight the original soon. The owner believes the photo to be that of our great grandfather's sisters but I doubt the suggestion given it is known that his sisters were born between 1820 and 1837. As I understand it, photography was still very much in its infancy in the 1830s so the likelihood is that the girls in the photo are not who they are thought to be. I agree with both Linda and Rosemary that the photo is more likely taken around 1870 to 1890. My great grandfather Manoel deAzevedo de Sousa Amarante came from the town of Manadas on the island of São Jorge and arrived in Australia in 1850. I suspect the children are most likely either his nieces or grand nieces. Certainly it is my understanding that the family were "well healed" and I suspect the photo was taken on São Jorge. If more information comes to hand, I'll update this post. Thanks again. The way the studio is staged gives me the feeling that the photo is from the 1880's or 1890's, but I give weight to Rosemary's dating of their hairstyles too. If you can look at the original photo, you should be able to get a better idea of the period it was taken. best of luck! :) Linda On Sunday, December 24, 2017 at 9:40:38 AM UTC-8, Azores Genealogy group wrote: Back to top <http://groups.google.com/group/azores/t/4565d7ca42d27c50?utm_source=digest&utm_medium=email> Looking for records of an individual and parents Cameron Hazer <[email protected]>: Dec 24 06:30AM -0800 Would the Garcia name have come from her family even though it was later adopted? Did your Manuel Souza Garcia marry an Isabel Jacinta? You said your Manuel was born in 1882-1892, yet, you are providing a MARRIAGE in 1882. You really need your freguesia. Pico is the 3rd most populated island. You are going to find many Manuels and Isabels that will fit your family. If you are in the U.S., what research have you done with U.S. records? Which records have you looked at?
