You need to do U.S. research to narrow down the freguesia (or council) on Sao Miguel. They have almost 70 churches. Looking for a Jose is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I don't know why you are saying Jose Mello went by Jose Achadinha. That's a place on Sao Miguel, although I have seen it listed as a surname.
