Natural da ilha Terceira, foi viver para São Miguel, onde aprendeu a fotografar com Mariano José Machado. Em 1875 é referenciado como fotógrafo ambulante, altura em que estabeleceu o seu atelier na Rua do Valverde, 48 , com o nome de *Photographia Central*, conhecida posteriormente por *Foto Toste*. Mudou-se por volta de 1879 para o número 58 da mesma rua, mudança esta anunciada em jornais dos vários concelhos da ilha. Os anúncios na imprensa revelam uma constante actualização com a aquisição dos mais diversos tipos de máquinas. Realizou uma viagem aos Estados Unidos da América, em 1900, na companhia da filha Maria das Dores, com o objectivo de aperfeiçoar o método de trabalho. Após a sua morte, a filha, casada com Jacinto Óscar Dias Rego, prosseguiu a actividade. Born in Terceira Island, he went to live in São Miguel, where he learned photography with Mariano José Machado. Moved around 1879 to number 58 of the same street, changed this announcements in newspapers of the several counties of the island. The ads in the press show a constant update with the acquisition of the most diverse types of machines. He traveled to the United States in 1900, accompanied by his daughter Maria das Dores, in order to improve the method of work. After his death, the daughter, married to Jacinto Óscar Dias Rego,and continued the activity. Hope this helps.
