The Priest sure knew. The name Guadalupe, originally was - Agoa de Lupe
and it has a story with it.
There was this place where the wolves [lupe] prowled to catch their prey
when they came to the water [agua] to drink. They named it Agoa de Lupe
{Wolves' water] and invoked our Lady as their protector. Nossa Senhora da
Agua de Lupe. Over time the two names were joined Agua+de+Lupe =
Guadalupe.
