Hello Maria, Entering your source is one of the most important things you can do yet many people do not do it. Genealogy programs have a means of entering sources and from what I have seen there are differences in formats and information.
If I were to enter the source of information I got from a newspaper, I would make sure I had the following information: 1. Name of the newspaper and where it was published 2. Date 3. Page number 4. Where the newspaper can be found. (for example at the library on microfilm call number xxxxx) The idea of copying and doing a cut and paste of the article is an excellent idea. This is a practice which I do. Some genealogy programs let you attach documents. I do this and also store the images in a file on my computer with a file name that identifies the item, (for example John Doe obituary from Daily News 3 Dec 1972) When entering dates I use a format that cannot be mistaken If I see a date 3/7/45 it could be easily mistaken for the wrong date is it Jul 3 or March 7? And is it 1945 or 1845? Because genealogy is world-wide, different cultures write dates differently. Europe and the US military use dd/mm/yyyy, most Americans us mm/dd/yyyy. So we need to be clear on how you write dates. Of special interest to many of us that use PT or CCA for records. When you quote them as a source. I always include the book name (Nossa Senhora da Estrela baptisms 1753-1757, Page number 37, reverse side, 2nd entry, CCA image number 0039) Note: Most people say page number, left or right side. If the page on the right is page number 38 it is the front side of page 38, then the left side of the image is page 37 reverse side This is because in the records only the front side of a page is numbered. The back of the page is the reverse of page number on the front. Another point of interest is that the images from CCA/PT can be downloaded to your computer simply right click and Save picture as. People are really impressed with the research you have done when you show them an image of your source. (I didn't see it before today.). The last couple of weeks I've been researching a lot in New Bedford and Boston and even found ancestors in Providence. (Great new discoveries.). I've been using the Portuguese American Digitized Newspapers and have discovered so much information, I'm not too sure on how to enter it as a source document. I'd like to crop and scan the article, not the entire page and enter it on the person's timeline. Maybe you know how to do that. (?). Copy and paste the link on to their name in familysearch. Thank you for all your help. Maria Elena -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group.
