The baptismal record of someone born in 1772 on Santa Maria Island said the father Was a " MARIANTE".
I googled it on Wikipedia and it's the Portuguese Marine Corp. So I guess in 1772 this person was a member of the Portuguese Navy. The Portuguese Marine Corp was founded in 1618. They have their own Coat of Armor. I wonder what was happening around 1772 years in Portugal. Any insights? It helps getting an idea of what this person did. Are my assumptions correct?
