Angela; I appreciate this info. With the different records using different
parts of our ancestors surnames at different times, it’s a wonder we ever
figure this stuff out!

These are not actually my people, although I do have a number of Soares and
Chaves as well as a few Camara and Ferreira in my lineage. I finally got so
tired of going back and forth looking for people. Perusing the same records
many times that I decided to just do spreadsheets on B/m/d on Vila do Porto,
Santa Maria and when I came across “Minhoto”, I thought it was unusual as I’d
only seen it once before. I sure am getting educated by doing the spreadsheets.

I really appreciate everyone’s help,

Sam (Mazatlán, MX)

Minhoto is what people from the Minho region are called.

Minhoto is what men from Minho are called, women would be Minhota. Is there a
chance that he was from Minho?

Angela;  No, he is married to:  Joana Filomena de Chaves Monteiro.  I have
another, Heitor Goncalves Minhoto, have not been able to connect them yet,
married to Isabel de Miranda.  I haven’t found a translation for Minhoto.

It was probably a nickname that in the meantime turned into a surname, since
the previous generations didn't use it, and one of his sons uses it.
